Student Counselling Services

The School Counselling Program provides therapeutic counselling support to students through a Prevention and Early Intervention framework. The program focuses on supporting children’s social and emotional wellbeing, helping them build skills, confidence and resilience as they grow.
Highly skilled counselors work alongside students, schools and families to support positive outcomes and help children reach goals that strengthen their wellbeing, relationships and engagement at school.

Program Overview

School counselling offers flexible, child‑centred support tailored to individual and school community needs.

Support may include:

  • Individual therapeutic counselling
    One‑to‑one counselling sessions that provide children with a safe and supportive space to explore feelings, experiences and challenges in age‑appropriate ways.
  • Group work with students
    Small group programs that build social skills, emotional regulation, resilience and positive peer relationships.
  • Psychoeducation for school staff and parents or carers
    Practical information and guidance to help adults better understand children’s social and emotional development and how to support wellbeing.
  • Collaboration with school staff and parents or carers
    Working in partnership to ensure consistent, coordinated support for each child, including referrals to other services when additional support is needed.

Counselling is delivered with care, respect and a strong focus on early support to promote positive long‑term outcomes.

Who is it for

The School Counselling Program is available to students attending approved Tasmanian Catholic Education Primary Schools.

CatholicCare’s School Counselling program works collaboratively with students enrolled in a number of approved Tasmanian Catholic Education Primary and secondary high schools. Providing child- centered, short to medium term therapeutic support. Access to this program

Students can be referred to the School Counselling Program via their teachers, principal, parents and or guardians. The school counsellor will then engage with the parents to assess support needs and gain consent. The school counsellor will work with the student to provide the most suitable intervention.

This service is provided free of charge.
