During Harmony Week (17 – 23 March), CatholicCare Tasmania came together to mark both Harmony Week and the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination, reflecting on the diversity that shapes our organisation and the responsibility we all share to challenge racism. We acknowledged the Traditional Custodians of Lutruwita/Trowunna/Tasmania and recognised that true harmony and belonging can only be built on a foundation of justice, truth telling and respect for the First Peoples of this land.
Teams across the state shared food, conversations and a quiz exploring cultural traditions, creating opportunities to connect, learn and reflect on our different experiences. The events also focused on reflection, responsibility and action. Together, we recognised that racism continues to exist in systems, policies and everyday interactions, and that strengthening belonging requires recognising racism, calling it out, and upholding the dignity of every person.
We are committed to embedding cultural safety and anti-racism into our work, including using respectful language guided by communities, ensuring interpreters and accessible communication are available, and strengthening our systems and decision making. By listening to the voices of our clients, staff and partners, we continue to learn and improve.
Harmony Week is not a single moment, but an ongoing commitment we all share.
