Acknowledging 26 January

26 January carries diverse meanings for Australians.

For many Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples, it is a day of mourning – a reminder of pain, loss and intergenerational trauma.

CatholicCare Tasmania acknowledges this complexity and stands with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples in recognising the ongoing impacts of colonisation. Guided by NATSICC’s 2026 Reflection & Discernment Guide, we choose to listen first, walk with care and compassion, and stand alongside First Nations communities.

We honour the resilience and cultural strength of First Nations Peoples and support truth‑telling initiatives. Our Catholic faith calls us toward healing, justice and unity. By embracing the truth of our history, we can help build a future grounded in respect, compassion and equity.

May we continue to walk gently with one another, strengthening relationships rooted in dignity, respect and shared hope.
