Each year, Anti-Poverty Week encourages Australians to raise awareness of poverty and its impacts, while advocating for action to create a fairer and more inclusive community. This year’s campaign called on the Australian Government to establish standard measures of poverty and targets to reduce it.
As part of Anti-Poverty Week 2026, CatholicCare Tasmania was proud to co-chair two community events alongside Vinnies Tasmania, bringing together community organisations, service providers and people from across the community in Hobart and Launceston.
The events created opportunities for people to connect with local services and gain a deeper understanding of the realities of poverty in Tasmania. Community stalls and activities also highlighted the wide range of support available to individuals and families experiencing hardship.
Designed to encourage discussion and increase understanding, the events shone a light on the challenges many Tasmanians face, including rising living costs, housing stress and financial hardship. They also highlighted the importance of working together to support those doing it tough and advocate for meaningful change.
Attendees were also invited to sign postcards that will be sent to local Federal Members of Parliament, helping to raise awareness of poverty in Australia and calling for action to reduce its impacts on individuals, families and communities.
We were pleased to collaborate with a range of community partners and organisations to deliver these events, helping to create welcoming spaces where important conversations could take place and connections could be strengthened.
Thank you to all staff, volunteers, partner organisations and community members who attended and contributed to the success of the Hobart and Launceston events. Together, through connection, collaboration and advocacy, we can continue working towards a Tasmania where no one is left behind and everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
