MSP's swimming success

September 2019

Over the last ten weeks MSP has partnered with Nadia Azizabadi of From Zero to Hero to provide a swimming program at the Hobart Aquatic Centre for 17 Afghan women.

Many of the women had never been to the pool in Hobart - or been swimming at all before - due to cultural and other barriers. The program provided a great opportunity for the women to enhance their swimming skills, build confidence in the water and experience a new level of empowerment and freedom in an activity that had otherwise been out of their comfort zone or traditional cultural expectations, as it was not common for women to swim in Afghanistan.

The women said that they had truly valued the support and guidance of their Farsi speaking instructor, Nadia Azizabadi, who was able to support the women build their skills faster and more accurately due to being able to deliver the program in their dominant language.

The women were invited to CatholicCare to celebrate their time in the program and they received a gift and certificate for their participation.
