Giving to those experiencing hardship at Christmas

November 2023

CatholicCare’s Christmas Appeal hampers aren’t just filled with food and toys – they also carry comfort and joy in difficult times, says Executive Manager Quality & Impact Kirsten Free.

The appeal, which has been running for several years, aims to raise funds and collect donations to make hampers for people accessing CatholicCare services.

“It is really special to be part of this – to see the care from the community and see firsthand the difference these donations make at a time that can be really difficult and stressful for a lot of people.”

Kirsten said in past years CatholicCare had been overwhelmed by the generosity of the community and the support given by so many people.

“People can get involved in any way,” she explained.

“Any donation can make a difference, whether it is a gift card, a toy, or non-perishable food, Christmas decorations – it will all help us to provide these special hampers at Christmas time.”

The gift of a hamper can make a big difference over the festive season.

“It reduces stress at a time of the year for people who are going through tough times and are struggling to find a way to provide for food and gifts,” Kirsten said.

“The care from the community through providing these donations for our hampers with special holiday food and items really brings comfort and joy.”

Donations will be distributed to people accessing CatholicCare services and programs towards the end of the year.

Kirsten said the involvement of businesses and other organisations was always welcome.

“We would love to come out and talk to businesses about the work that we do and how their donations will support Tasmanians at Christmas time,” she said.

“Donations go directly to our clients. We have been delivering baskets to workplaces allowing people to donate, and then distributing them to our clients in December.

“People can also drop off gifts and non-perishable foods at any of our offices in Hobart, Launceston, Burnie, and Devonport, or make a secure online financial donation.

“Any type of donation is welcome, and all levels of support is appreciated.”
